UNDERGROUND UPRISING "ARTIST OF THE WEEK": OHPENMIIND

We sat down with the Underground Uprising "Artist of the Week", Ohpenmiind and asked him some questions to help us figure out who he is, what makes him tick and some insights into his music.

Where did you grow up and what was it like?

I grew up in Glendale AZ. Went to Glendale High School and then even to Glendale Community College for a couple years. Soccer was my main focus for most of my life until I broke my ankle my sophomore year of college and that’s when I truly had to think about what I wanted to to do with my life.

When did you decide to start pursuing music?

I decided to pursue music around November of 2018 I was at a really low point in my life and I felt like I was lost. I felt I had no ambition. I felt I didn’t know who I was anymore. I didn’t start writing because I thought I was any good, I started writing to bring myself back.

How did you get the name "Ohpenmiind"?

I came up with Ohpenmiind because life became a lot simpler when I was able to step back and analyze a situation from the outside in. It didn’t solve all my problems, but it brought clarity and that’s what I want to show case with my name and music.

Biggest influence?

If I had to pick my biggest influence it would have to be Kendrick Lamar. His impact and diversity is what has always amazed me. The way he builds stories in his albums and has them connect in ways you have to truly pay attention is something to truly admire. There’s nobody like Kendrick.

What does the name of your debut album mean?

"Peace Among Worlds" means finding acceptance and balance. Acceptance in regards to not worrying about things I can’t control and putting my energy into my relationships, goals, mental health. Thus, creating a search for balance even when there’s the weight of expectations and reality in the mix.

Favorite song on the album?

My favorite track on the album might be Padre Santo because I got to thank my dad for a lot of things he’s done. This song takes me back to specific times to when we were really struggling. When I think about where we all are now it brings me the biggest smile on my face.

Biggest challenge making the album?

My biggest challenge in trying to make the album was finding the right stories to tell. I feel this album could’ve gotten lost with its direction and purpose, but I made sure to stay on the topics that I wanted to cover in order to have it flow and come full circle.

Artist you want to collaborate with?

An artist I’d like to collab with would definitely be Ma$termind. I really enjoy his anime references and his chill flow. He’s definitely a vibe and one of the hardest in the valley.

What is next for Ohpenmiind?

My next step is to start performing once this lockdown passes. I spent all of last year focusing on my craft and now i feel its time to find shows to open for and spread the sound.
